Balloon Rockets! Quick and Easy for All Ages

Balloon Rockets.jpg

Are you looking for a simple activity for your school age children this summer?  Do you also need the activity to be engaging for younger children?

Balloon rockets are great for a rainy day or an exciting outdoor activity.  I saw this idea on Pinterest a while ago and decided to give it a try.  It was from this great site Discover Explore Learn. If you have small children, be careful with balloons because they can be a choking hazard.

All you need is string, straws, tape and balloons.

Attach one end of the string to a chair or piece of furniture.  Thread the string through the straw.  Attach the other end of the string to a different chair.

Make sure the string is pulled taunt.  Blow up a balloon but don’t tie a knot in the end.  I used a clothes peg on the end to keep the air from escaping.

Tape your balloon onto the straw.  Now you are ready to watch your rocket go.

Take the clothes peg off the balloon and watch your rocket zoom along the string!!  All the children laughed and cheered as the balloon travelled down the string.  The younger ones wanted to repeat the process again and again and again.

We homeschool, so this ended up being a science lesson for the older children.  We predicted what would happen, talked about the movement of air, and then changed the conditions to try out a few ideas.

The children raced two different shapes of balloons.  They also tied the string on an incline and a decline.

Our final experiment included the string being tied straight up to the upstairs railing.  The younger children love this song so we sang it before letting the balloon go.

Five, four, three, two, one,
Blast off!

The little ones crouch down and then jump UP when you sing blast off.  The balloon made it all the way to the top of the stairs!
