Easy DIY Felt Tic-Tac-Toe Board

Easy DIY felt toy

Many providers who do before/after school care have their older children with them for the entire week of spring break. Today I thought I would give you a cute DIY craft you could make yourself or with your school agers to keep them amused one afternoon. Tic Tac Toe is an easy game that many kids enjoy.  Show your daycare children how to play and they will want to play game after game.

The object of the game is to have three of your pieces in a row either horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Two players take turns placing their pieces on the game board squares.  If no player achieves three in a row once all the squares are filled then it is a tie.

If you have older kids who enjoy sewing you could have them sew this game using felt (I made it as a gift for a 6 year old) or you could simply have them cut out the pieces from felt.  Felt sticks to felt so flat shapes on a flat board game would be a faster, easier version if that works better for your group. If you want to get crafty, here is how I made this felt Tic-Tac-Toe game.

I found a lid to trace and traced out five Os onto purple felt.  I drew a template X and then traced it five times onto red felt.

I decided to stuff the Xs and Os to make them puffy and fun to hold.

I used a blanket stitch but you could use a straight stitch as well.

Once I completed my game pieces it was time to make the board.

I cut out black strips of felt and placed them on the grey felt board to help me decide how wide to make them

Sorry, you can’t tell in this photo but I used black thread to sew the black strips onto the game board.

The six year old was delighted with her Tic-Tac-Toe game.  The younger children were very interested in touching the game pieces and the older children wanted to start playing a game.  It folds up nicely and can be secured with a ribbon. It turned out to be a good travel game.

Happy Tic-Tac-Toe,…. three in a row, I win!
