Hide and Seek -3 Ways to Play! {100 Days of Play Blog Hop}

Hide and Seek.jpg

I’m excited to take part in the 100 Days of Play Blog Hop co-hosted by Sun Scholars and Life at the Zoo.  100 fantastic bloggers have joined together to provide you with 100 days of simple ways to play with your children.  These play ideas only take five minutes and any materials needed are common household supplies. We all know children love it when we get down on the floor and engage with them in meaningful play.  Check out the link at the bottom of this post to see the collection of ideas.

My easy and quick play idea is- Hide and Seek!  Hide and seek is a classic game that children can play over and over again. I have three different versions to keep the game exciting and interesting for all ages.

1.Traditional Hide and Seek

The basic rules (in case you are not familiar with this game) is for one person to count to a given number (10) while the other people hide.  Once the person has finished counting they declare they are coming to find everyone.  We like to say ….8…9…..10……ready or not, here I come!  Or sometimes  8….9…..10…..ready or not, you must be caught!  Then the counter looks around the designated area and finds each person in their hiding spot.  We like to take this game outside when the weather is nice.  Older children enjoy playing this game in the dark with a flashlight.  We also play in the basement with the lights turned off.  Everyone has a flashlight and the kids have a blast surprising each other in the dark!  I have wonderful memories of playing flashlight hide and seek outside at dusk in the summer time with my neighbours.

2. Hide the Toy

Hide the toy is a great version of hide and seek if you are low on space or people.  Choose a small toy (the kids love it when I hide their special stuffed animals) and have your child cover their eyes.  Hide the toy and have your child find it.  Reverse the roles and repeat.  We even play this game with small figurines just using the couch cushions.

3. Sardines

Sardines works well if you have a bunch of people.  One person goes and hides while everyone else closes their eyes and counts. Everyone spreads out and hunts for the one person who is hiding.  Once someone finds that one person, they very quietly join them in the hiding spot. Eventually, each person finds the hiding spot and squishes in with the group.  The more people who have discovered the group’s hiding spot, the easier it is to locate it because the giggling tends to get a bit loud! The last person to find the hiding spot is IT for the next game.
