St.Patrick’s Day Green Food Taste Challenge

Do your daycare children enjoy eating green foods?  Are they willing to try new vegetables?  I have a few kids in my group who will try anything and others who are more on the reluctant side.

I thought a green food taste challenge might be a great way to create enthusiasm towards some new foods and help celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.  I bought a bunch of green foods. I tried to include green foods that were both familiar and new.  I also included one crowd pleaser-Green Smarties!

I had 12 green foods and one green drink for the children to try in their food challenge.  The foods were: Sugar Snap Peas, Green Beans, Broccoli, Peas, Celery, Green Peppers, Cucumbers, Grapes, Granny Smith Apples, Spinach Tortilla Wraps, Spinach Wheat Thin Crackers, Green Smarties and a Kale Smoothie.  I cut up a tiny piece of each food type and organized them into muffin tins.

To make the activity like a real food challenge I had the children rate each food after they had tried it.  The younger children simply gave a thumbs up or a thumbs down sign after trying the food.  We started with the Kale Smoothies and they were a thumbs up!

The older children were given a sheet to record their preferences.  I wrote the name of each food and then had the kids draw a happy face if they liked it or a sad face if they didn’t care for it.

The recording sheet helped motivate my selective eater to try all of the green foods.  When the children had tried each sample, they then tallied up how many green foods they liked and how many they didn’t.  Once everyone was done, the children had second helpings of the green foods they enjoyed. Granny Smith apples, green grapes and the sugar snap peas were all favourites with my group. It was a fun and amusing St.Patrick’s Day activity.

Happy Green Eating Everyone!
