We are starting a winter unit about Mittens in my home daycare so I thought I would kick off the unit by serving a mitten inspired lunch. I put almond butter and homemade strawberry jam into two separate small plastic baggies.
I cut a tiny hole in the bottom corner of each bag so that I could squeeze out the contents like a cake decorating bag. Don’t make the same mistake I did, use jam without big chunks of strawberries! Strawberry pieces kept clogging the hole in the bag and the jam came out in uneven spurts. I used my kitchen scissors and cut whole grain bread into mitten shapes.
Then I squeezed out the almond butter and jam to make a pattern. One child asked for raisins so I included two rows of raisins. I finished the cuffs off using cream cheese.
I added a few side items and lunch was ready!
The children dove into their lunches with glee. It only took a few minutes to prepare but the kids talked about their mitten sandwiches for the rest of the day. Isn’t it nice to be able to put a smile on someone’s face in the middle of the day?
