Preschool Math Chalk Maze

Preschool Math maze.jpg

I have a few children in my home daycare who LOVE mazes.  We were playing with chalk outside and I decided to draw a maze for them.  They grabbed some toy cars and had a great time driving their vehicles through the maze.  Then my teacher brain took over and I thought, how can I make this educational?

One of the kids had a school bus so I told a story about a bus driver going to pick up children for school.  First the bus driver had to visit the house #1 where one child lived.  I drew a house with one stick person.  Then the driver had to make his way through the maze and find house #2 where two children were waiting to be picked up.

The children quickly caught on to the task and were eager to have a turn driving the school bus.  This activity gave them a chance to practice their counting and recognizing numbers.  They could visually see the number four and see four stick kids standing beside the house.  At the end of the maze we drew a school where the kids could be dropped off.

You could adapt your maze by using higher numbers or letters in alphabetical order. It might be a fun way for older children to practice spelling words or addition and subtraction questions.  There is also the possibility of teaching right/left or north/south.  My children enjoyed drawing all kinds of other village buildings to decorate the maze as they waited for their turn.

Have an aMAZing good time!
